Happy Saturday!!!
It sure has been chilly here lately on the farm! We’re into the second snow storm this year and staying afloat! We are in the midst of lambing, and calving season here! Most of the mamas have done fine, but we have had to TLC a few lambs, a mama with mastitis and pull a calf trying to come out sideways! The lambs who seem smaller or who get off to a slower start always get jackets, and everyone has access to a fully bedded creep pen complete with heat lamps 24/7! The mamas always get a warm bucket of molasses water after giving birth for some extra nutrients!
Overall we have had a great turnout and the animals don’t seem to mind the cold/snow at all when they have shelter, fresh straw bedding and some unfroze water! We also had a rejected bottle piglet from the neighbors we brought back to life. His name is Lucky or Hibachi as Huntleigh likes to call him! He’s often times in the store, always begging for a bottle of warm goat milk- which he already gets every 3 hours!
I would rather farm all summer long though because the workload of hauling water, breaking ice, buying extra feed, bedding pens constantly, birthing animals and the mental drain of always worrying everyone is warm is a lot of work!! I still wouldn’t trade it for the world! Thankful for all my helpers and trying as best I can to limit my lifting as I near the end of my pregnancy and keep this little babe cooking as long as possible!
